Rock Work & Pavers
Premier Outdoors builds custom rock work and paver projects that give properties a stronger sense of form and function.
Hardscape work is as much a durability decision as it is a design choice. Unlike softscape elements that change with the seasons, well-built stone work, paver surfaces, and retaining walls are permanent features that define how a property looks and functions for decades. Premier Outdoors approaches every hardscape project with the same priority: build it correctly the first time, with proper base preparation and drainage, so the installation holds up through Alabama's wet winters, hot summers, and the occasional freeze-thaw cycle without settling, cracking, or washing out.
Retaining walls are one of the most requested hardscape services we provide, particularly on the sloped and terraced lots that are common throughout the Lake Martin area. A well-built retaining wall accomplishes two things simultaneously: it holds back soil on grades that would otherwise erode, and it creates usable, flat areas on hillside lots. Natural sack rock and stacked fieldstone walls look at home in the wooded Lake Martin environment. For steeper sites, we build terraced wall systems that step down the slope and create multiple levels of usable outdoor space. Proper drainage behind every wall is non-negotiable — it's the single most important factor in long-term performance.
Paver patios, flagstone terraces, and outdoor living areas are where the hardscape investment pays off most visibly. A properly installed patio off the back of the house extends usable living space into the outdoors and creates the natural gathering point for family and entertaining. Concrete pavers offer versatility in pattern and color, and individual units can be replaced if ever damaged — a significant advantage over a poured concrete slab. Flagstone set in mortar or dry-laid in sand creates a more naturalistic surface that feels custom and rooted in the landscape. We build fire pits, outdoor kitchens, steps, and seating walls as part of the same project to deliver a complete outdoor room.
Gravel installation and rock-edged beds are often overlooked as landscape upgrades but deliver significant visual impact at a practical cost. Decomposed granite, river gravel, and crushed stone placed within a defined rock border gives large areas a finished look without the expense of sod or the maintenance of mulch. Rock-edged drainage channels — gravel-filled swales or dry creek beds lined with river rock and boulders — solve drainage problems while looking intentional rather than utilitarian.
The base preparation under any paver or flagstone installation matters as much as the surface material. Pavers installed without proper excavation depth, compacted gravel base, and sand setting bed will shift and become uneven within a few seasons. We don't cut corners on base preparation because fixing a failed installation is almost always more expensive than doing it right the first time. Every paver project Premier Outdoors installs is built on a base that will support it for the long term.

FAQ
Rock Work & Pavers — Common Questions
Answers to the most common questions about our Rock Work & Pavers service.
What is the difference between natural stone and concrete pavers?
Natural stone — flagstone, bluestone, travertine, or fieldstone — has unique variation in each piece and creates a handcrafted look that concrete cannot fully replicate. Concrete pavers are manufactured to consistent dimensions, making them easier to install in precise patterns and generally more affordable. Both are durable options. The choice usually comes down to the aesthetic and the budget for the project.
How long does a paver patio last in Alabama's climate?
A properly installed paver patio with a compacted gravel base and sand setting bed will last 20 to 30 years or more in Alabama's climate. The most common cause of early failure is inadequate base preparation. Individual pavers that are damaged or shift over time can be replaced without disturbing the rest of the surface.
How do retaining walls handle water pressure behind them?
Every retaining wall we build includes drainage behind the wall — either gravel backfill, a perforated drain pipe, or both, depending on the wall height and the volume of water the site receives. Without proper drainage, hydrostatic pressure builds up behind the wall and causes it to fail. We never skip this step.
Do you build fire pits and outdoor kitchens?
Yes. We build natural stone and concrete block fire pits with steel fire ring inserts, surrounded by flagstone or paver aprons and integrated seating. Outdoor kitchens — built-in grill stations, concrete block structures with stone veneer, concrete countertops — are also part of our hardscape offering.
Can you combine natural stone and concrete pavers in one project?
Yes. Combining materials is often the most interesting design approach — for example, a flagstone patio with a paver border, or a concrete paver driveway with a natural stone apron at the entry. We discuss material options and combinations during the estimate to find the approach that fits the property's character and the project budget.
