Drainage problems are among the most common — and most damaging — issues affecting properties in Alexander City and the Lake Martin region. Much of East Alabama sits on clay-heavy soil that absorbs water slowly, which means even moderate rainfall can cause standing water, soggy lawn areas, and soil erosion when the grade or drainage infrastructure isn't set up correctly. Left unaddressed, poor drainage leads to dead grass, eroded slopes, waterlogged planting beds, and in serious cases, foundation moisture problems that are expensive to correct.

French drains are the most widely used solution for properties with chronic soggy areas or high water tables in isolated sections of the yard. A French drain consists of a perforated pipe buried in a gravel-filled trench that intercepts groundwater and surface water before it can saturate the soil above. Once installed and backfilled, a French drain is largely invisible and requires minimal maintenance. Channel drains and catch basins are the right solution when large volumes of surface water need to be captured quickly — driveways, pool decks, patios, and parking areas all shed water rapidly because they're impervious. A channel drain set flush with the paved surface intercepts that runoff at the source and routes it underground to a safe outlet. Catch basins work for areas where water converges from multiple directions. Both systems can be connected to ADS or PVC pipe runs that route water to a pop-up emitter outlet or an approved discharge point on the property.

Sump pumps provide a powered drainage solution for situations where gravity alone isn't enough — when the discharge point is uphill from the collection area, or when the volume of water is too great for a passive system. We size and install sump pumps appropriate to the flow rate and lift required, and we ensure discharge lines route water far enough from the structure that it doesn't simply return to the problem area. For Lake Martin properties with low-lying areas near the water, sump systems are often the most reliable long-term approach.
